This is an important week for the Lakeland Flying Tigers on the field as they play two division rivals. The Flying Tigers will travel to Tampa Monday through Wednesday to take on the Yankees in a battle of the two hottest teams in the Florida State League (FSL). The Flying Tigers just took 3 of 4 games from the Vero Beach Devil Rays and have won 10 of their last 14 games and are now 19-17 on the season. The Yankees have been even more impressive having won 9 of their last 10 games and are now 22-14, in 2ndplace in the FSL. The teams have split their previous 4 meetings this season. The Flying Tigers will send Duane Below, Jonah Nickerson and Matt O’Brien to the hill.

The Flying Tigers return home on Thursday, May 15 to take on the Dunedin Blue Jays at 7:00 pm. The game marks the beginning of a season-high 7 game homestand at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Despite playing in the largest stadium in the FSL, the Flying Tigers lead the league in home runs with 30. The Flying Tigers pitching staff has been red hot during this current win streak. Rick Porcello has won his last two starts and is 3-4 on the season with a sparkling 1.74 ERA. Pretty amazing for someone that was in high school at this time last year. Porcello’s next start is expected to be Friday night at home.

Well, bittersweet may be a better word. The last day of Spring Training is here, which means a couple of things. Mainly it means that the Detroit Tigers will be heading back to their home at Comerica Park in Detroit and the Cleveland Indians will be heading back to Jacobs Field in Cleveland. While it is sad to see them leave, it is exciting to see the beginning of another season of Major League Baseball. The second thing it means, by the way, is that all those sayings like “Every team comes to Spring Training with hopes of winning the pennant and every player believes they can win the batting title, etc.” will go out the window with the first pitch of the regular season. Hey, it’s just the truth. At least Cleveland and Detroit aren’t in that group of teams that have to throw those hopes out the window! They should both be fighting hard for the Division title….and more this season.

By the way, don’t forget that baseball hasn’t totally headed North for the summer. The Lakeland Flying Tigers will start their season on Saturday, April 5 against the Clearwater Threshers. Also, look for Flying Tigers General Manager Zach Burek to be posting updates here regularly on the Flying Tigers season as it unfolds.
