Florida State Water Ski Championships
Dates: 7/11 – 7/12
Venue: Mulberry Ski Paradise
- The Florida State Water Ski Championships will bring in over 100 participant and an estimated 400 spectators to Polk County

Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) Girls National Tournament
Dates: 7/12 – 7/18
Venue: 8 Different Polk County High School gyms
- The YBOA Girls National Tournament will bring into Polk County 70 teams with over 700 participants and over 1000 spectators

]]> http://catchcentralflorida.com/2009/07/07/this-week-in-sports-4/feed/ 0 Sunshine State Games are Here http://catchcentralflorida.com/2008/06/11/sunshine-state-games-are-here/ http://catchcentralflorida.com/2008/06/11/sunshine-state-games-are-here/#comments Wed, 11 Jun 2008 14:37:20 +0000 Kris Keprios http://catchcentralflorida.com/?p=81 The countdown is now over and the 2008 Florida Sunshine State Games is now underway in Polk County. Florida’s only Olympic-style Sports Festival began last weekend with Flag Football and  the games continue this weekend all over Polk County.  More than 5,000 of Florida’s finest amateur athletes, between the ages of 4 and 88, will compete in over 20 sports during the three days of competition.Venues will be used in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Auburndale, Fort Meade and Mulberry.  The Lakeland Center will serve as a hub of athletic activity this weekend with several sports taking place there. Go here for more information or results of Sunshine State Games competition.

When the games come to an end this year, don’t worry…you won’t have to wait four years until the next Sunshine State Games. You will just have to wait a year because the Games will be back in Polk County in 2009.

These are words that every college football player longs to hear as they make the transition to the next step in their football careers. Several Polk County football players have heard these very words in the past. Names like Ray Lewis, Desmond Clark, Paul Edinger, Wayne Gandy and many others. This year, college football players from Polk County may not have heard those exact words, but they are certainly on their way to playing in the NFL. Here they are with a list of where they are headed:

Alex Boston (Bartow) – Florida State – Defensive End: Boston was not selected during the seven rounds of the draft, but was signed as a free agent the following day by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He will report to rookie camp with the Jags May 15. Boston told The Ledger’s Rick Brown:

“I’m really not concerned,” he said. “Jacksonville did not have enough draft picks to draft me. But they signed me. They must have seen a lot in me to do that. Everything happens for a reason”

Lance Leggett (Bartow) – Miami – Wide Receiver: Leggett was signed as a free agent by the Cleveland Browns and will report to their rookie camp soon. He will be competing for a WR spot on a very talented Browns offense.

Tony Joiner (Haines City) – Florida – Safety: Joiner will be heading Tennessee as he signed with the Titans following the draft as a free agent.

Justin Forsett (Mulberry) – Cal – Running Back: Forsett did not play at Mulberry High all four years due to a move to Texas his junior year, but he grew up in Polk County. He was drafted in the seventh round by the Seattle Seahawks.

We’ll keep you posted on all these players progress as they start the steep climb of making an NFL roster.
