RussMatt Baseball Returns to Polk County in February

For the 4th straight year, Russmatt Baseball will be hosting their annual Central Florida Invitational right here in Polk County. Collegiate baseball teams from the around the coast will all gather over a six week period for spring training and game competition. Starting on February 18th, over 200 teams from all different divisions (NCAA D I, II, III, NAIA and JUCO) will begin to pour into all parts of the county to begin their preparation.

Some of the top teams venturing out to our region will be Northwestern, Navy, Georgetown, Army, Yale and North Dakota State. This collegiate spring training is a time for major league scouting, practice, and preparation for what will be a tough season ahead. the Russmatt Baseball tournament is a great opportunity to grab family and friends, and scout out your favorite potential pros or just enjoy a great day of baseball.

Rugby Action in Auburnale This Weekend

Major college rugby competition will be coming to Auburndale this weekend as the Florida Lady Gators will take on the UCF Lady Knights this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale. The match is part of a doubleheader hosted by Lakeland Spartan Rugby and the Lakeland Lady Spartans will be facing Regis Jesuit High School, from Aurora, Colorado, immediately following the college match. Admission to both matches is free.

Meet Lyn St. James at the Florida Sports Hall of Fame

Racing fans will have several opportunities to meet racing great Lyn St. James during this weekend’s Lake Mirror Auto Classic, but for those that may miss the opportunity this weekend, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame member will make an appearance at the new Florida Sports Hall of Fame in Auburndale on Monday, October 18 from 11:00 a.m. until noon. St. James was inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and she will be on hand to donate some of her racing memorabilia to the museum and also meet fans. She has also just released a new book, entitled “Lyn St. James – An Incredible Journey” which will also be available during the meet and greet.
St. James was the first woman to ever win the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of The Year (1992) and she competed in seven Indianapolis 500 races and 15 Indy Car events. She set the world record on a closed-course for women – reaching 225.722 mph during the 1995 Indy qualifying and also enjoyed success in sports car racing with class victories at Sebring and Daytona. She has competed internationally at the 24 Hours of LeMans and the Goodwood Motorsports Revival.

The Florida Sports Hall of Fame museum is not normally open on Monday’s, but will be open for this special event. Admission to the Florida Sports Hall of Fame is free and the museum is open Tuesday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
