Lakeland Flying Tigers
Dates: Now – September 1

-The Lakeland Flying Tigers have returned to Lakeland for the 2012 season.
-This week’s home games are:

58th Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention
Dates: Friday, May 25 – Saturday, May 27
Venue: The Lakeland Center
-The Florida Federation of Square Dancers, Inc. presents the 58th Florida State Square & Round Dance Convention, expected to bring over 600 dancers.
-This 2012 Square & Round Dance Convention’s theme is “Mardi Gras Fun in the Sun”.

Polk County Classic Men Pro-Am Basketball Tournament
Dates: Friday, May 25 – Saturday, May 27
Venue: George Jenkins High School – Lakeland
-This double elimination charity basketball tournament consists of 14 teams who will compete over a three-day weekend.

A-C-T Carillon Classic 5k Run/Walk
Date: Saturday, May 26
Venue: Bok Tower Gardens – Lake Wales
-This inaugural event will be hosted by the Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association, in which proceeds will benefit its educational and professional initiatives, as well as the George W. Harris, Jr. Runaway and Youth Crisis Shelter.
-Participants will enjoy a gorgeous route (with carillon music from the tower), a tech t-shirt and post-race refreshments along with the opportunity to enjoy the gardens after the race for free.

Disney’s Memorial Day Soccer Shootout
Date: Saturday, May 26 – Sunday, May 27
Venue: Lake Myrtle Sports Park – Auburndale
-Polk County Sports Marketing teams up with Disney Sports to host a portion of the 2012 Disney Memorial Day Soccer Shootout presented by Danimals at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale.
-This is a FYSA Sanctioned Tournament, which is open to all USSF/FIFA affiliated organizations for boys and girls in age groups: U9-U10 (6v6), U11-U12 (8v8), and U13-U14 (Full Sided), U15-U19* (Full Sided).

Florida State Cup Under 19 Finals
Dates: Saturday, May 26 – Sunday, May 27
Venue: Lake Myrtle Sports Park – Auburndale
-FYSA hosts the Florida State Cup U19 Finals at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale.
-Florida State Cup is an open competition for any FYSA registered team meeting the requirements of eligibility for participation.
-Teams participating in this weekend of Florida State Cup U19 Finals will have qualified through previous Florida State Cup competition

Youth Memorial Madness
Dates: Saturday, May 26 – Sunday, May 27
Venue: Bartow “555” Complex
-This is a Florida ISA qualifying tournament that is expected to bring in over 300 softball players to the Bartow “555” Complex.

Lakeland Raiders vs. Eastern Kentucky Drillers
Date: Saturday, May 26
Venue: The Lakeland Center
-Kick-off for all home games will be 7:15pm.
-Single game and season tickets are available.

National Invitational Tournament
Dates: Saturday, May 26 – Sunday, May 27
Venue: Lakeland and Winter Haven
-The National Invitational Tournament is expected to bring in over 25 competitive softball teams to the Polk County area.
-The games will be played at fields in Lakeland and Winter Haven.

Red Ribbon Run Results

In case you missed it over the weekend, the Red Ribbon Run took place and had a great turnout (as always). This was the 17th year for the race and it has become a tradition in Polk County. I can remember running in this event a long time ago when I was in 5th Grade. It used to be held at Lake Morton back in the day. The Drug Prevention Resource Center puts on the race and also features a Kids Health and Wellness Carnival during the event. This year, it all happened at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland. Registration was free for students in kindergarten through fifth grade in the one-mile fun run. Adults and students in grades six and above paid a $10 registration to complete in the Open Race. It is a lot of fun for a good cause.
