Youth not only from Polk County, but from all across central Florida will be playing in the Mid Florida Football & Cheerleading Conference Jamboree at Simmers-Young Park in Winter Haven. The first games star at 9:00am and the last games begin at 5:00pm. This promised to be an action packed day of youth football. Click on MFFCC for the schedule.
Also on Saturday, August 14, the Webber International University Warriors return to the field with a scrimmage. Starting at 1:00pm the Warriors will battle against each other in a controlled scrimmage at their practice facility. All Webber practices are open to the public. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the sights and sounds of college football. These are words that every college football player longs to hear as they make the transition to the next step in their football careers. Several Polk County football players have heard these very words in the past. Names like Ray Lewis, Desmond Clark, Paul Edinger, Wayne Gandy and many others. This year, college football players from Polk County may not have heard those exact words, but they are certainly on their way to playing in the NFL. Here they are with a list of where they are headed:

Alex Boston (Bartow) – Florida State – Defensive End: Boston was not selected during the seven rounds of the draft, but was signed as a free agent the following day by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He will report to rookie camp with the Jags May 15. Boston told The Ledger’s Rick Brown:

“I’m really not concerned,” he said. “Jacksonville did not have enough draft picks to draft me. But they signed me. They must have seen a lot in me to do that. Everything happens for a reason”

Lance Leggett (Bartow) – Miami – Wide Receiver: Leggett was signed as a free agent by the Cleveland Browns and will report to their rookie camp soon. He will be competing for a WR spot on a very talented Browns offense.

Tony Joiner (Haines City) – Florida – Safety: Joiner will be heading Tennessee as he signed with the Titans following the draft as a free agent.

Justin Forsett (Mulberry) – Cal – Running Back: Forsett did not play at Mulberry High all four years due to a move to Texas his junior year, but he grew up in Polk County. He was drafted in the seventh round by the Seattle Seahawks.
