United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) – Fall National Championships

-This 18U wood bat baseball event is expected to bring in over 1000 participants and over 500 spectators to the Lake Myrtle Baseball Park.

USSSA – Christina Flames – October fest

Venue: Christina Park-Lakeland
-This softball event is expected to bring in a minimum of 25 teams with ages raging from 8 to 18 years of age. There will be about 300 participants and about 500 spectators from out of county.

Tuff Luck Ranch – Cornfusion 5K Ranch Run
Dates: 10/1
Venue: Tuff Luck Ranch – Lakeland
-This is a 3.1 mile off-road coarse consisting of traditional Florida ranch scenery and the not-so-taditional scenery of a sunflower field, pumpkin patch, and corn maze, all which you will enjoy free entry to with your race bib. Proceeds of this race will benefit The Dre Aloia Miracle Recovery Fund. Race time starts at 8:00 a.m. Awards will be given to the overall male and female finishers, as well as the top 3 runners in male and female age categories. Kids run free at 9:00 a.m.

Miaze Inc. – Cornfusion Corn Maze

Venue: Tuff Luck Ranch – Lakeland
-The Cornfusion Corn Maze is something fun for everyone! This month-long celebration consists of a real corn field maze, mini mazes, farm animals, a corn box, a corn cannon, a cow train, a hayride, a pumpkin patch and more!! The Cornfusion Corn Maze will be held in Lakeland. It is open on weekends only. Admission includes all attractions.

Florida Southern College “Eastern Collegiate Regionals” – Water Ski

-A one round, three event tournament that will determine top teams for regional standings and national placement at Bennetts Ski School in Louisiana on Oct. 13-15. The tourney also determines the D1 and D2 teams for Nationals as well.

2011 Polk County Sports Hall of Fame Class Named

The Polk County All Sports Awards continues its 11-year tradition of recognizing Polk County athletes for their excellence in sports at the Lakeland Center on Tuesday, June 21 at 6:15. Five new members will be honored for their achievements and will enter The Polk County Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2011 Hall of Fame class includes: former Florida Southern golfer and PGA Tour standout Marco Dawson; track and field superstar JJ Corbett ; water-skiing superstar Ricky Joe McCormick; and Florida Southern basketball legend Jerry Johnson. In addition to the four inductees from the world of sports, P. Scott Linder will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Community Contributor for his contributions to Polk County.

In addition to the All Sports Awards, the evening will also feature the induction of a new Polk County Sports Hall of Fame class. Ten awards will be given to athletes in specific categories such as Professional Athlete of the Year and Male and Female Team of the Year among many others. The winners are selected by the PCASA Selection Committee, made up of local business leaders and sports figures and will be announced later this month.

Lakeland’s First Youth Triathlon is this Weekend!

The Lakeland Rotary Club is providing youth with the opportunity of becoming a triathlete by hosting a youth triathlon in conjunction with their Child of the Sun Jazz Festival and Urban Triathlon. Youth ages 5-15 are welcome to compete at the Fantaine/Gills Family YMCA on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. Click here to register your child for the youth triathlon. There are many options on TV when it comes to watching sports, but there aren’t many when it comes to shows that cover local sports in the Central Florida area. Be sure to tune in to “Sports Central” on PGTV to catch up on the latest in the world of sports in Polk County and around the state. The show airs every day on PGTV, which is carried on Bright House Networks (Ch. 622), Comcast (Ch. 5) and Verizon Fios (Ch. 22), and features interviews with event organizers, local sports stars and segments featuring events that have been hosted in Polk County. Sports Medicine Symposium This Weekend

As high school sports get ready to kick off for the new school year, Lakeland Regional Medical Center wants to get student athletes ready as they hold their first Sports Medicine Symposium this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Lakeland. The event is free to high school athletes, their parents and coaches and will feature speakers who are experts in medical care. High school students already involved with athletics, as well as entering high school freshmen who plan to join an athletic team are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided to all attendees. Registration is required, and space is limited. You can register online or by calling 863-687-1400.

Grand Opening of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame

The Florida Sports Hall of Fame is coming to Polk County and it will open in grand fashion on June 22 as the building at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale that will house memorabilia from some of the biggest stars Florida sports has ever known officially opens.

The Grand Opening and ribbon cutting of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame will take place on Tuesday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale and will be followed by the induction of the 2010 Florida Sports Hall of Fame Class that evening at The Lakeland Center. The hall of fame will be open until 2:00 p.m. that day, closing in preparation for the induction at 6:15 p.m. that evening. Hall of Fame members scheduled to appear at the event include: Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Doug Sanders, Charlie Owens, Don Garlits, Fran Curci, Jimmy Carnes, Roger Strickland, Hubert Green, Pat Borders, Catie Condon and Ruth Alexander. “We are so excited to be able to share this grand opening with the Hall of Fame members, the people who make this new building what it is,” said Florida Sports Hall of Fame Chairman, Rick Dantzler. “This promises to be a star-studded, memorable event for everyone who attends,” Dantzler added.

Following the grand opening, four new members will be inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. The 2010 Florida Sports Hall of Fame class consists of Lake Wales native and baseball standout Pat Borders, Olympic gold medalist Catie Ball-Condon, long time sports columnist Jack Hairston, who will be inducted posthumously, and professional golfer Hubert Green. The induction ceremony, which will also feature the Polk County All Sports Awards, will be aired live on Bright House Sports Network.
