2012 is bringing three big events to Polk County. Stay in shape this new year and test your limits with the North Ridge Bridge Run 5K Race, 2012 Warrior Dash and Ironman 70.3. Registration is now open for all three events.

North Ridge Bridge Run 5K Race

What: Join the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, the City Center Community Development District and the North Ridge Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board for the Grand Opening Celebration and Ribbon Cutting of Ernie Caldwell Boulevard.

When: Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

-The Inaugural North Ridge Bridge Run 5k Race begins at 8:30 a.m.
-Dedication of Ernie Caldwell Boulevard and Ribbon Cutting will be held at 9:30 a.m.
-Antique Car Parade begins at 10:00 a.m.
-Displays and Activities until 12:00 p.m.

Where: The event will take place at Posner Park in Davenport. Turn at Posner Boulevard entrance and follow signs to parking on Royals Way.

2012 Warrior Dash- Central Florida

What: This fierce running series is held on the most challenging and rugged terrain across the globe. Warriors conquer extreme obstacles, push their limits and celebrate with music and warrior helmets. This is the wildest, muddiest, most fiery 5k run you will ever have the opportunity to participate in. With 12 seriously challenging obstacles ranging from mud-pits, to climbing walls, tight-rope walks and fire pits, finishing competitors are deserving of the title Warrior! Every participant will go home with a Warrior helmet, Warrior Dash t-shirt and custom Warrior Dash medal.

When: Saturday, January 21-Sunday, January 22 at

Ironman 70.3 Florida

What: Ironman 70.3 Florida has moved to a new location for 2012 at Lake Eva Park near Haines City and features an exciting new course.

Just 30 minutes outside of Orlando, Lake Eva Park provides a great setting for the event. The one-loop swim starts and finishes on a white sand beach. The transition area will be set up in a large parking lot on the site. The one-loop bike route goes through Polk County and offers athletes the chance to enjoy views of citrus groves and cattle farms as they ride along the quiet country roads, while the run course includes three loops around Lake Eva and finishes in a grassy park near the lake.

Lakeland’s First Youth Triathlon is this Weekend!

The Lakeland Rotary Club is providing youth with the opportunity of becoming a triathlete by hosting a youth triathlon in conjunction with their Child of the Sun Jazz Festival and Urban Triathlon. Youth ages 5-15 are welcome to compete at the Fantaine/Gills Family YMCA on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. Click here to register your child for the youth triathlon. Polk Senior Games are Coming

More than 2,600 men and women, 50 and over, are expected to participate in 86 Olympic-style events including: Badminton, Basketball Shooting and 3 on 3, Billiards, Bocce, Bowling, Bridge, Checkers, Chess, Cribbage, Ballroom & Social Dancing, Square Dancing, Darts, Euchre, Field Events, Fishing, Golf 18 Hole and Putt & Chip, Horseshoes, Lawn Bowling, Pepper, Pickleball, Powerlifting, Punt Pass & Kick, Racquetball, 5K Road Race, Scrabble, Senior Smarts, Shuffleboard, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track, Trap Shooting, and Walking.

Required pre-registration begins January 1, 2011. Deadline to enter – Friday, February 11.

The entry fee is $10 for the first event and $3 for each additional event up to a maximum of $28. Bowling, Golf, Shooting and team sports have additional fees. All participants receive a T-shirt and are invited to a free Closing Ceremony at The Lakeland Center, which includes special awards, mini-health fair, goody bags, door prizes, andentertainment.

There are many options on TV when it comes to watching sports, but there aren’t many when it comes to shows that cover local sports in the Central Florida area. Be sure to tune in to “Sports Central” on PGTV to catch up on the latest in the world of sports in Polk County and around the state. The show airs every day on PGTV, which is carried on Bright House Networks (Ch. 622), Comcast (Ch. 5) and Verizon Fios (Ch. 22), and features interviews with event organizers, local sports stars and segments featuring events that have been hosted in Polk County. Here is a schedule of when you can catch the show:

Sports Medicine Symposium This Weekend

As high school sports get ready to kick off for the new school year, Lakeland Regional Medical Center wants to get student athletes ready as they hold their first Sports Medicine Symposium this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Lakeland. The event is free to high school athletes, their parents and coaches and will feature speakers who are experts in medical care. High school students already involved with athletics, as well as entering high school freshmen who plan to join an athletic team are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided to all attendees. Registration is required, and space is limited. You can register online or by calling 863-687-1400.
