The Flying Tigers Announce 2016 Opening Day Roster

The Lakeland Flying Tigers have announced their 2016 Opening Day roster.  It will feature nine top 10 draft picks and eight players who appeared in games for the Flying Tigers in 2015.  The roster includes 13 pitchers, 2 catchers, 6 infielders, 4 outfielders and 5 players on the disabled list
Outfielder Christin Stewart headlines a list of prospects.  Stewart is currently rated the fourth-best prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization by MLB.com.  He was selected by the Tigers in the first round of the June 2015 draft from the University of Tennessee where he was a first-team All-SEC selection as a junior.  Outfielder Mike Gerber is currently rated the fifth-best prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization by MLB.com.  He was selected by the Tigers in the 15th round of the June 2014 draft from Creighton University.  Gerber was named the Tigers Minor League Player of the Year in 2015 and was named to the Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star Team and was selected a low Class A All-Star by Baseball America.
Tyler Alexander leads the Flying Tigers starting rotation.  Alexander was selected by the Tigers in the second round of the June 2015 draft and is currently rated the 15th-best prospect in the Tigers organization by MLB.com.  The rotation will also include Endrys Briceno, Jairo Labourt, A.J. Ladwig and Artie Lewicki.
Dave Huppert returns as manager of the Flying Tigers for his sixth season.  This season marks Huppert’s 29th season as manager at the minor league level.  Huppert has the most wins by any active manager in Minor League Baseball entering the 2016 season with 1,926.  He guided Lakeland to the FSL Championship in 2012.  Nelson Santovenia (hitting), Jorge Cordova (pitching) and Jeff Mathers (Strength and Conditioning Coach) will begin their second seasons with Lakeland.  Jason Schwartzman (Athletic Trainer) returns for his third season.
The Flying Tigers open the FSL season on Thursday, April 7 against the Tampa Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and gates to Historic Henley Field will open at 5:00 p.m.  All fans that enter the ballpark will receive a 2016 Flying Tigers magnet schedule.
