Boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 from Winter Haven and other Polk County communities are invited to compete in a free Soccer Challenge sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 7091 of Cypress Gardens on Saturday, September 26 at Dennison Middle School. The school is located at 400 Avenue A, SE in Winter Haven, diagonally across the street from Bond Clinic.

Registration will begin at 9:00 am, followed by the competition on the school’s soccer field which is expected to last until about 12 noon. Boys and girls who wish to compete must have parental consent, present a valid birth certificate and fill out a registration form. The contestant’s age on the day of the event will determine the division he or she competes in. This is the first year Knights of Columbus Council 7091 is offering a Soccer Challenge.

According to Brian Sharak, youth director of the sponsoring K of C council, the event will feature competition in 12 separate divisions: Boys 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14-years-old; Girls 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. All contestants will get 15 shots at the net and earn points based on the accuracy of their kicks.

Contestants who finish first in each division will earn a special prize and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. The first place finisher in each division automatically qualifies for district completion. District winners will advance to the regional round to compete for berths in the state championship.

“We encourage boys and girls who enjoy soccer to compete in the K of C Soccer Challenge,” Sharak said. “We are very excited to be offering this K of C youth activity to kids in the greater Winter Haven area for the first time.”

Sharak noted that any kids who are registered for a Soccer Challenge sponsored by another K of C council are not eligible for this one, adding that K of C Council 7091 will stage its annual Basketball Free Throw Championship and Youth Spelling Bee early next year.

The K of C Soccer Challenge is a major youth initiative of the Knights of Columbus. Every year hundreds of thousands of youngsters participate in sporting and academic competitions offered by the New Haven, CT-based Knights of Columbus Supreme Council and implemented by local K of C units all over the United States.
