Detroit Tigers Call Up Matt Joyce
Posted on May 5th, 2008 by Kris Keprios
Former Florida Southern baseball standout Matt Joyce was on the receiving end today of a move Detroit Tiger Manager Jim Leyland warned this weekend would “shake up” the lineup. That might not sound good at first, but Joyce was on the good end of the shakeup. The Tigers designated struggling outfielder Jacque Jones for assignment (they have to either trade him or place him on waivers in the next ten days) and called up Joyce.
Joyce was hitting .299 with 17 runs scored, six doubles, a triple, five home runs and 21 RBI in 28 games for the Mud Hens. He was a 12th round selection of the Tigers in the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The Florida Southern alum will make his MLB debut for the Tigers and wear #20.
Joyce is one of many Polk County baseball players playing professional baseball. Be sure to check back here soon for a complete list with stats and where they are now.
Hopefully this shake up will be what the Tigers need to get back on track. What do you think their biggest problem has been so far this season?
