Before you start breaking out your leather bomber jackets and aviator sunglasses, that isn’t the Top Gun we are talking about. Sorry, no Goose and Maverick this time. What will be in Lakeland is one of the world’s most prestigious model aviation events. Top Gun is an exciting competition among four different categories, all featuring radio controlled aircraft which are near perfect replicas of their full-scale counter parts. Aircraft representing every era of aviation will be represented at the event. WWI bi-planes, Piper Cubs, WWII Corsairs, Boeing B-29’s, F-86 Saber Jets, Lear Jets, F-16’s, F15’s and many – many more. These planes that they fly are pretty cool. They aren’t the model airplanes you made growing up, that’s for sure.
Top Gun is held at the western most portion of Lakeland Linder Airport, The entrance is on Medulla Road just west of the Sun N Fun Museum entrance. Just 1 ½ miles East of County Line Road. From I-4, turn south onto County Line Road, go 4 miles to Medulla Road – Signs will be everywhere. The action starts at 8:30am and continues until 4:30pm all five days. Tickets are only $10, and kids under 7 admitted at no charge. It is a great family event that anyone can attend.
There is a lot to see so bring your family and a lawn chair. There is a huge manufacturer’s area featuring all sorts of radio control model airplane products as well as a big food court complete with a covered dining area.
